Thrilling Showdown Sets Up Great Week for Athletics

Thrilling Showdown Sets Up Great Week for Athletics

Last week’s Fall Showdown Series between Kent Denver and Colorado Academy was both competitive and exciting, as our longstanding sports rivalry ended in a perfect draw on the night. Our Sun Devils got a thrilling overtime win in field hockey, lost in volleyball and finished in a scoreless tie in boys soccer. Boys tennis was postponed due to the rain. The evening concluded with an impressive victory for football in its game across the street at Denver Christian.

The Friday games were even featured on both the Saturday and Sunday shows of the 9NEWS Prep Rally! Thank you to all the families who came out to CA to help cheer on our student-athletes. We look forward to more excitement this weekend at Homecoming! Watch our highlight video from the Showdown Series here.

KDS field hockey

Alden C. ’28 scored both goals—including the game winner in overtime—last Friday to help the Sun Devils field hockey team beat the Mustangs 2-1 in the Fall Showdown and stay undefeated on the year. No. 1-ranked Kent Denver earned another shutout win Wednesday night against Dakota Ridge 6-0, as Hadlee W. ’27 and Nora L. ’27 notched their first goals of the season before the game ended early due to rain. The team now looks forward to its Homecoming game against Pine Creek Friday, September 19 at 4 p.m. on Horn Family Field.

Varsity boys soccer has had back-to-back ties—a 0-0 draw against the Mustangs during the Fall Showdown, followed by a 1-1 finish at The Classical Academy earlier this week. The Sun Devils will play Thursday, September 18 at No. 2-ranked Stargate before returning to Kent Denver for their Homecoming game Friday night against 4A school Lutheran at 4:15 p.m. on DeSo Field.

KDS volleyball

The KDS volleyball team is also looking forward to a big week of game action, as the 7-5 Sun Devils play at Ralston Valley Thursday, September 18 and then again in the Homecoming game Saturday, September 20 at noon against No. 3-ranked Stargate in Yates Pavilion.

After the football team’s 47-27 victory against Denver Christian last Friday, the 2-0 Sun Devils now look forward to what should be a terrific Homecoming matchup on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. against Forge Christian, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A.

The boys tennis team completed a 7-0 sweep of Cheyenne Mountain last week before getting rained out in the Fall Showdown matchup against CA. The team then put forth an incredible effort in Tuesday’s hard-fought 4-3 loss against 5A school Fossil Ridge. Wednesday, KDS won all four of its individual matches vs. George Washington before things were called early due to rain, with the other three matches rescheduled for next week. Our Sun Devils will return to action Friday, September 19 in the Full Send Tournament in Arvada.

KDS cross country

Our cross country runners competed in the Liberty Bell Invitational this past Saturday at Heritage High School, with the boys team taking 19th place and the girls team finishing 5th. Penny K. ’28 led the way, finishing in 8th place individually! Next, the teams will compete at the St. Vrain Invitational Saturday, September 20 at Lyons High School.

The boys golf team competed at the Strasburg Invitational on Wednesday and then took first place Thursday morning at its Metro League tournament—this one at Indian Tree Golf Course. Zach Z. ’29 came in first individually, with Johnny E. ’26 finishing in a tie for second and Chase K. '28 tying for 10th.
