Swimming’s Statement Win Highlights Sun Devil Success

This week featured a matchup of two of the premier swim & dive programs in the state, and Kent Denver came out with the victory! The Sun Devils took first place in a tri-meet held at their home aquatic center of Schlessman Family YMCA, beating out St. Mary’s Academy by a score of 121-115 to claim the top spot in the competition. The entire team put together some incredible performances, earning first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (Elsa ’28), 50 freestyle (Hadley ’26), 100 butterfly (Valerie ’29), 100 freestyle (Elsa), 500 freestyle (Camryn ’27) and the 200 freestyle relay (Elsa, Valerie, Emily ’26 and Hadley). With just two weeks to go until the Tri Peaks League Meet, followed by the state meet February 13-14, the team is surging at the right time!

In girls basketball, Kent Denver is ranked No. 7 in the state in Class 4A after four straight wins have improved the team’s record to 9-6 overall. Austin ’26—who was honored this past weekend for reaching the 1,000-career point milestone during last year’s playoffs—is leading the team with nearly 17 points and 10 rebounds a game. The Sun Devils are back in action Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. home tipoff vs. Denver Christian, the No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A. Join us in Yates Pavilion for a hoops doubleheader against the Thunder, with the boys game starting afterwards at 7 p.m.! 

Our boys basketball team has won five straight games and currently sits at 12-3 overall as the No. 4 ranked team in Class 4A. The Sun Devils are averaging a blistering 84 points per game as a team, with three seniors scoring in double figures. Caleb is leading the way with 26.3 points per game, while Sam has averaged 14.7 and Josiah has tallied 10.1. 

Meanwhile, in ice hockey, Kent Denver is ranked No. 9 in Class 4A with a 4-3-2 overall record. After a close 3-2 loss against Cheyenne Mountain last week, the Sun Devils will look to bounce back in a road rematch against the Red-Tailed Hawks Friday at 6:30 p.m.
