Sustainability Scoop—LEED Certifications on Campus

Kent Denver’s commitment to environmental stewardship continues as the new Athletics and Wellness Center, currently under construction, aims to become the school’s newest LEED-certified building.

Since 2010, every new building on campus has been designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, the internationally recognized benchmark for sustainable building developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED Certifications reflect a building’s performance in areas such as carbon emissions, energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, transportation impact, material use and indoor environmental quality.

The new Athletics and Wellness Center is targeting Gold certification, which requires a minimum of 60 points on the LEED scorecard. It will join other certified buildings on campus, including Schaden Dining Hall (Platinum), Yates Pavilion (Gold), the Middle School (Platinum) and the Welcome Center/Upper School North (Platinum). As LEED Green Associates, Innovation Associate Molly Callaway and Associate Head of School Jerry Walker have played a vital role in integrating sustainable practices into the new facility’s design and construction. Notable features include an energy-efficient HVAC system, low-emitting materials and over 50 kilowatts of rooftop solar.
