Sarah Mitchell Honored at Art Education Conference

Sarah Mitchell—a longtime beloved art teacher at Kent Denver who retired this summer after 24 years at KDS and 35 years in independent education—has received the Distinguished Service Within the Profession Award from the Colorado Art Education Association. She accepted the award at the association’s annual conference this past weekend in Breckenridge, where several of her Kent Denver arts colleagues joined her to celebrate this special achievement.

From the studio to the soccer field, where she helped coach for many years, Ms. Mitchell shaped countless students during her time as a Sun Devil. She also influenced and supported the Kent Denver arts faculty through her teaching and leadership as department chair for 11 years.

“I want to give a special thanks to my incredible colleagues who nominated me and wrote letters of recommendation,” Ms. Mitchell said to the room of art educators after receiving her award. “I would not be here if not for all of them. I feel really privileged to have been in the art classroom for so many years. Being an art teacher takes time and a lot of effort, but it’s well worth it. The kids out there need you, and you are so important in their lives.”

Congratulations to Ms. Mitchell on receiving this well-deserved recognition. We’re thankful for her lasting positive impact on the arts at Kent Denver School!
