May Social Responsibility Spotlight

May Social Responsibility Spotlight

This school year has been a fantastic example of the lasting impact students create in their communities through service and volunteer work as part of Kent Denver’s Social Responsibility & Impact program. We close out our 2024-25 Social Responsibility Spotlights by recognizing Christopher Liu ‘25 and Bita Parizi-Newman ‘28 for their dedication and thoughtful contributions to the organizations they serve.

Christopher is on track to complete 300 hours of service during his time at Kent Denver, channeling his interests in education into purposeful work with Breakthrough Kent Denver and Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital. Similarly, Bita, who is close to completing her 80-hour graduation requirement as a freshman, followed her curiosity about marine science and compassion for those experiencing homelessness into her volunteer efforts at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Denver Rescue Mission

Christopher finds motivation in sharing his skills and interests to make a difference in others’ lives.

“It's really satisfying to take any skill I already have, even this early in life, and actually see it make a difference in someone else's,” he said.

At Breakthrough Kent Denver, Christopher led classroom activities during both the Saturday School and Summer programs. These hands-on experiences helped spark his desire to become a teacher, one he plans to pursue by studying education in college this fall.

Recognizing a need, Christopher also launched a summer swim lesson program for Breakthrough students, combining his love of swimming and experience as a lifeguard. With support from Executive Director Brooke Brewer, he developed the curriculum and recruited friends to help teach.

“I understand that swimming education isn’t necessarily a high priority for these kids, but I think it’s an essential life skill,” Christopher said.

In addition, Christopher volunteers at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital, supporting patients and families in the Ronald McDonald Family Room and at the front desk. He values the chance to support those facing difficult times.

“Even a little bit feels like a lot when you are going through a hard time,” he said. “It feels really meaningful that I’m able to make them feel comfortable, even if that’s just providing directions.”

Fueled by Gratitude

The simple act of bringing a smile to someone’s face is what inspires Bita to give back.

“It feels really meaningful when the people I’m helping show their gratitude and I see their smiles pop up,” she said.

At the Denver Rescue Mission, Bita makes and serves lunch to those experiencing homelessness—an experience that has shaped her perspective on patience, empathy and kindness.

“When you’re serving, it can feel chaotic,” she said. “I try to put myself in others’ shoes…imagine not having a bed or a guaranteed meal. It reminds me that patience is key. You never really know what someone is going through.”

Bita’s compassion for those facing housing insecurity started young, making snack bags as a child to hand out to people in need. She believes that small acts of kindness can change someone’s day.

“I’ve seen volunteers act rudely, and I think, ‘If that’s how they’re treated in a shelter, imagine how they get treated on the streets?’ I make sure to be warm and friendly because everyone deserves a little bit of kindness in their life.”

Bita also volunteers at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, where she helps visitors scan tickets and navigate the museum. The incredible community of volunteers and patrons keeps her coming back.

“Helping someone find their way or fix an issue with their tickets, and seeing them get really happy, makes me really happy too,” she said.

Thank you to Christopher, Bita and all our students for making a difference in the greater community! Visit our website to learn more about Social Responsibility and Impact at Kent Denver.
