Kent Denver Celebrates Lunar New Year
Kent Denver Celebrates Lunar New Year
Wednesday, January 29 marked the start of Lunar New Year, and as we enter into the Year of the Snake, Kent Denver students and families are celebrating this important cultural holiday.
Last week, Amanda Lin’s AP Chinese Language and Culture class teamed up with Jon Fortmiller’s Painting I students to learn more about the history and traditions of Lunar New Year. The students worked together to paint messages of good fortune using an artform called Square Word Calligraphy, which uses Chinese characters that resemble the English alphabet. The artwork is now on display in Schaden Dining Hall, which has been decorated for Lunar New Year. The dining hall also featured a special menu of traditional Chinese dishes on Wednesday to celebrate the holiday.
In Annick Chen's Chinese classes, students wrote spring couplets, a common practice during the Lunar New Year to bring good fortune and happiness. They also enjoyed tasting nian gao, or rice cakes, which are traditionally eaten during this festive season to symbolize growth and prosperity.
On Thursday morning, students and families joined the KDPA’s Heritage & Culture Alliance for an egg roll-making demonstration led by our Chinese teachers, Ms. Chen and Ms. Lin, along with Mark Luchetti from Kent Denver’s Food Services team. During the demonstration, families also shared their Lunar New Year traditions.
Lunar New Year celebrations will continue on campus over the next few weeks with special assemblies in the Middle and Upper School, as well as other classroom activities.
