Kent Denver Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Kent Denver Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Every year from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month is observed to celebrate the positive contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans on our country’s achievements, culture and history. During this time, Kent Denver students and faculty/staff have enjoyed a variety of in-classroom activities and campus-wide celebrations highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month.

In the middle school, students in Spanish learned about notable Hispanic American figures, and some classes listened to Spanish-language songs. Students also decorated sugar skulls during a Workshop Wednesday in the Middle School Impact Studio. In Melanie Haas’ 9th grade Global History of the Modern World classes, students created their own papel picado—intricate cut-out paper banners—which are used as decorations for various holidays and celebrations.

Around campus, informative slides on screens throughout the buildings have featured influential Hispanic figures and their impact on history, and book displays in the Middle and Upper School libraries have highlighted Hispanic authors. Throughout the month, the dining hall also served themed meals and featured special decorations. Looking ahead to Día de los Muertos, an ofrenda will be set up in the dining hall that will include a display of some of the sugar skulls students made this week.
