For Honors Sports Analytics, It’s March MATHness!

For Honors Sports Analytics, It’s March MATHness!

Students in Arty Smith’s Honors Sports Analytics class aren’t leaving their brackets up to their intuition. Each year, Mr. Smith uses the annual NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament as a launching point to teach lessons about probabilities, modeling, simulation and AI. The goal is for the students to be able to fill out better brackets by comparing the model’s output to the picks of the general public to identify bias and inefficiencies in the market.

This fun and topical way to teach math caught the attention of Denver’s Fox31 News. They joined the class on Tuesday to cover the story and hear more about the intersection of mathematics and spots. Check out the video, including interviews with students, below!
