AP Environmental Science Explores Edgar Experimental Mine

Students in Emily Danitz’s AP Environmental Science classes got a first-hand look at the intricacies of mining this week when they visited the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs.

As part of the Mining Engineering program at Colorado School of Mines, the mine is used as an educational and research facility. The class walked about a mile through the mine while learning from a School of Mines student about the mining process—how they identify where to mine, what different mines are used for, as well as some of the personal and environmental hazards of mining. The tour included a look inside the mine’s underground classroom and a hands-on glimpse into what a career in mining engineering might look like.
