A Day in the Life

We operate on a rotating seven-day schedule (Days A-G) with five periods a day. Each period meets five times during the seven-day cycle. Students in the Middle School will take six classes with additional time built in for advisory, electives, community time, recess and seminars. Upper School students will also take six classes, and each student will have an additional individual free period.

Period 0: Science

Our school day starts at 8:30 a.m.—9 a.m. on late start Wednesdays—so there’s time to get that very important adolescent sleep!

In science, middle schoolers begin with a focus on Earth and Environmental Sciences and an emphasis on the scientific method. That means lots of labs and experiments in and out of the classroom!

We believe all students are mathematicians, and our flexible course sequencing places students in the right level to match their learning needs.

In 6th grade, students are introduced to the Arts at Kent Denver through a yearlong rotation that provides a sampling of what 7th and 8th grade students experience in more depth—including dance, music, technical theatre, theatre and visual arts classes.

Period 4: English

Our English program encourages critical and appreciative reading, eloquent writing and imaginative thinking.

The theme at the start of middle school, explored through daily reading and writing, is “Who am I?”. The goal is for students to hone their skills for understanding and analyzing literature, while connecting it to themselves and their community.

Move, play, recharge and reconnect!

You might want to throw a ball around outside, play cards in the Centennial Center or work on a custom ‘recess project’ in our Impact Studio.

Period 5: World Language

Kent Denver offers French, Spanish and Chinese, starting in 6th grade.

We believe knowing a language other than your own is an essential skill in our changing world, and it's a key part of a well-rounded education. Our language students gain proficiency in a fun and natural way with games, songs and other hands-on activities.

Upper School students come together weekly for our student-led assembly to learn about important news and events, hear from distinguished speakers, cheer on their classmates’ performances, and most importantly, celebrate the school year as a community.

Period 1: Free Period

All Upper School students have a free period that rotates through their weekly schedule. Whether you use this time to meet with teachers, go to Math Lab, get ahead of homework or socialize, this valuable time is yours to choose how you use it.

Period 3: Contemporary Music

Two years of Visual and Performing Arts credit are required for graduation. Upper School students can choose from a variety of art, music and theatre classes.

Starting in our ninth grade Molecular and Evolutionary Biology course, students discover the wonders of everyday life through active and engaging classroom discussion, collaborative work and laboratory activities, and even via time on the reservoir in one of our canoes!

Kent Denver’s Upper School English curriculum starts with English 9, which emphasizes literature and language while examining themes of identity, expectations, resilience, belonging and family.

Sports Practice

In grades 9 and 10, students are required to participate in two seasons of a sport or one season of a sport and one season of an athletic performance activity. In grades 11 and 12, students must participate in one season of a sport or two seasons of an athletic performance activity.
