Exciting Changes Underway in Gates/Magness!
Science building under construction

When the Gates Science and Magness Technology Center opened in 2001, it offered a state-of-the-art facility for an ambitious science program and significantly expanded the only original campus building shared by the Kent and Denver Country Day schools.

Nearly a quarter century later, the growth of Kent Denver’s science program has pushed Gates/Magness beyond its capacity, requiring another significant remodel to accommodate student interest and to bring the facility up to the level of our other learning spaces.

In May, construction crews began the renovation and have been working throughout the summer to prepare the building to reopen at the start of the 2024-25 school year. Highlights of the remodel include:

science building under construction
  • Modernizing all existing classrooms and offices, including new furnishings and equipment
  • Creating a second dedicated chemistry classroom and a significantly larger classroom for advanced biology courses
  • Significantly expanding the design/build studio used by physics, engineering and other courses
  • Creating a dedicated research space for independent study and Innovation Scholar student projects
  • Updating mechanical systems and replacing aging roof
  • Adding and/or reconfiguring entrances to create better building access for students and teachers.

Science Department Chair Dr. Mary Fran Park (pictured, left) is particularly excited about the impact of this project on her department’s faculty, students and programs.

“This renovation will enhance the already exceptional teaching that has been happening at Kent Denver," she explains. "We look forward to using our new spaces to expand student-driven research and deliver high-quality science education that encourages innovation and hands-on learning.”

Students, faculty and the community will have the opportunity to experience our vastly improved science facility next month. This is the first of four capital improvement projects planned through 2027—all of which will contribute to fulfilling priorities from the school's Strategic Vision and elevating excellence at Kent Denver.
