From the Head of School: Cultivating an Innovation Mindset

While in recent years, “innovation” has become a somewhat buzzy term in education circles, it is not a novel concept here at Kent Denver. The desire to be a forward-thinking, aspirational school is baked into our DNA, manifesting itself not only in the continued evolution of our programming but also in the mindset of our students and, ultimately, our alumni.

This issue of Perspective highlights several of these alumni and illustrates how they have built upon their Kent Denver experiences in fascinating ways.

Kent Denver’s efforts to engender an innovative mindset are rooted in our commitment to Mastery, Agency, and Belonging, three concepts that guide our work as a school. In considering Mastery, it is our commitment to helping students develop foundational skills that can ultimately be applied to any range of endeavors. The value of critical thinking, effective communication, and productive collaboration, to name just a few, have always been at the heart of a Kent Denver education. By intentionally teaching these skills and providing opportunities for our students to practice them in meaningful ways, we equip our students with the ability to effectively consider new possibilities in creative ways.

Through our commitment to Agency, we empower our students to gain greater independence in pursuing their passions and interests. Whether this manifests itself in their curricular choices or the varied activities in which our students choose to engage, they are supported in these efforts in ways that help them to think broadly. The result is that Kent Denver graduates are comfortable following their natural curiosity to explore opportunities that are relevant to them.

As for Belonging, our desire to ensure that each and every student is known and valued for who they are is foundational to helping them develop the confidence to take risks. A learning environment where students feel safe is a catalyst for them to become creative problem solvers who are not afraid to make mistakes while in pursuit of new ideas and deeper understandings. The willingness to take a unique approach to an existing issue requires courage that can be nurtured in students when they are emboldened to be the best versions of themselves.

Ultimately, the power of a Kent Denver education is not just felt by our students, as its ripples extend far beyond our campus. The culture of innovation at Kent Denver lends itself to an entrepreneurial spirit, which is evident in so many of our alumni and the impact they continue to have on the world.
