Fall Athletes Showcase Sun Devil Spirit!
Fall Sports Recap

Kent Denver was grateful to have in-person learning in the fall and that Upper School students on the boys' golf, boys' tennis and cross country teams were permitted to compete by CHSAA thanks to a variance secured over the summer. Other fall sports—field hockey, football, boys' soccer and volleyball—were moved to a special early spring season.

"I am so impressed with how all of our student-athletes are overcoming this year’s challenging circumstances with positive energy," Director of Athletics Jeff Hollway said. "For the three teams that competed this fall, it was really amazing to watch them follow our procedures and attack each day with relentless enthusiasm. They blazed a trail for the athletes that will compete this winter and spring!"

The cross country team gathers at state meet

Cross Country
Coach Corky Dean had a record number of runners this year, including many strong returning athletes and several first-time runners from other fall sports teams.

From the opening day, Coach Dean could see the team would be special. The Devils dominated many early competitions during the abbreviated season, and for the first time ever, qualified both the boys' and girls' cross-country teams for the 3A state meet in the same year!

The boys finished second at regionals—just one-tenth of a second out of first place—to qualify for state for the second consecutive year. They ultimately finished 10th at state. The girls' team also finished second at regionals, a feat made even more impressive in that, because of injuries, all of KDS's qualifying runners were 9th-graders. The freshmen also ran well at state, finishing 13th overall.

Golf putting

Boys’ Golf
Boys' golf won the Metro League and finished second at their regional qualifiers, with senior Jeffrey Zhou (pictured) taking the regional tournament's top spot. The team traveled to Gunnison for the 3A state meet, where they ultimately finished third overall.

Tennis team poses with regional trophy

Boys’ Tennis
Boys' tennis won its 29th-consecutive regional championship and qualified for all divisions of the 4A state tournament. After two days of hard-fought battles, the Sun Devils finished fourth overall in the team standings. Notable individual results include Will Writer '22 and Mareks Zeile '23 winning the #4 Doubles championship match in three sets, and Finn Cooper '22 finishing as state runner-up at #2 Singles.
