From Lab Partners to Life Partners: A Kent Denver Love Story
A man proposes to a woman on a blanket in a park with trees and a golf course in the background.

For Camryn Capoot ’18 and Matt Honnen ’18, the formula for a lifelong connection was discovered in an unlikely place: Dr. Jeff Caulfield’s senior year AP Chemistry class.

Camryn and Matt in Science Class

While they had crossed paths occasionally since starting 6th grade at Kent Denver in 2011, it was the intimacy of a 10-student advanced science class during senior year that finally brought them together. Paired as lab partners just before the Fall Ball season, the two quickly realized their chemistry extended beyond the chemistry class.

“We started dating officially in the winter of our senior year,” Camryn recalls. Like many high school sweethearts, they faced the daunting challenge of a long-distance relationship after graduation in 2018. Matt headed southwest to Texas Christian University, while Camryn moved across the country to attend Duke University.

Though they initially parted ways to focus on their respective collegiate journeys, their Kent Denver roots kept them in touch. The shared history of their time on campus—Matt on the football field and Camryn on the field hockey turf—provided a foundation that eventually led them back to one another.

As Camryn explains, “Kent Denver was a pivotal part of our relationship! It’s where we first met, where we got to know each other, and where we met many of our friends who we are still close with today, many of whom were involved in our story and will be involved in our wedding. My dad, aunt, and uncle  (Chris ‘86, Carmen ‘89, and Barry ‘89) graduated from Kent, as well as my younger sisters (Caley ‘20 and Courtney ‘22) and cousins (Ashley ‘18 and Connor ‘21).”

Today, the couple has fully returned to their Colorado roots. Matt works as a mechanical engineer while Camryn is pursuing her medical degree at the University of Colorado Anschutz.

Their connection to Kent Denver remains as strong as ever. In fact, it was the backdrop for their next big milestone. During a walk on the back side of campus with Emma Boatman '18—a favorite activity since returning home—Matt surprised Camryn by waiting in Chenery where they had graduated. In a touching tribute to their origin story, he was waiting with one of their senior year lab reports printed out and their families hiding nearby to witness the proposal.

The Sun Devil spirit will be out in full force in September 2026, when Camryn and Matt wed at Ten Mile Station in Breckenridge. With a wedding party and guest list full of former classmates and KDS parents, it’s clear that for this couple, the bonds formed in AP Chemistry truly are permanent.
