At Kent Denver, science education is a broad, rich experience that embraces all of the physical sciences, mathematics and their relevant technologies. Here, science studies weave a rich tapestry that is both pertinent to, and relevant for, today’s students and forms bridges to our students' exciting futures.

Our Science department offers a strong curriculum enhanced by collaboration between teachers and students, and proper sequence and connectivity between each of the science disciplines. Well-chosen concepts and content incorporate issues of technology and society, and include discovery, inquiry, critical thinking and problem-solving experiences.

The Science department faculty assume responsibility for helping adolescents learn to use their minds well, for seeing that students master essential skills and areas of knowledge, for asking students to apply and extend their understanding and for ensuring that these essentials apply to all students. The Science department believes that teaching and learning must be challenging and personalized to the maximum feasible extent, and that students must have the opportunity to excel in both fundamental and advanced course work. Advanced courses and honors designations are available to students who excel in the sciences.

Jeffrey Caulfield

Jeffrey Caulfield

Titles: Science Teacher
Biography:

B.A.—Chemical Engineering
Ph.D.—Analytical Chemistry

"I never want to stop learning and I love partnering with students to learn along their side."

Before beginning his teaching career at Kent Denver, Dr. Caulfield co-founded a company that used gas-phase chemical reactions to produce thin plastic coatings on difficult-to-coat materials. This work, along with a brief stint in the aerospace industry and Ph.D. research involving ground-water pollutants, led to Dr. Caulfield's deep fascination for material science, space and environmental studies. He shares his enthusiasm with students in his 6th and 12th-grade science classes.

"Students are so optimistic and eager to understand that it makes every day an exciting adventure," he says.

Emily Danitz

Emily Danitz

Biography:

"I love learning something new everyday. I love watching the light bulb moment students have when something clicks for them."

As Head Volleyball Coach and a science teacher in the Upper School, Ms. Danitz plays and important role in the lives of her students and athletes. Ms. Danitz chooses to work for Kent Denver because of our strong community.

"I love the dedication our students have, and I love the camaraderie among the faculty," she says.

Deanna Detmer

Biography:

"I loved being a student. Being a teacher allows me to continue on a path of lifelong learning. Teaching is both challenging and rewarding. Everyday brings something new."

Prior to joining Kent Denver, Ms. Detmer taught AP Chemistry and Honors Chemistry in both Glastonbury, Connecticut and in the Cherry Creek School District. Before beginning her teaching career, she was an environmental engineer specializing in soil and groundwater remediation.

Ms. Detmer says she chooses to work at Kent Denver because "I value community and building relationships. I thrive in an environment of collaboration. The students, faculty and staff at Kent Denver are incomparable in their dedication to building and fostering relationships."

Evan Gaffney

Evan Gaffney

Titles: Science Teacher
Biography:

B.S.—Physics

"As a physics teacher, I seek not to create a generation of engineers and nuclear physicists, but one of critical, logic-based problem solvers who reject simplicity and view the world through complex lenses."

While earning his degree in Physics, Mr. Gaffney minored in Mathematics, Music and Education. He enjoys teaching because he is able to see the results of his efforts immediately reflected in students' growing understanding of the topic.

"I choose to work at Kent Denver because I love the overwhelming support I receive from my colleagues, my students and their families," he says. "My job here feels incredibly focused."
