"The speech and debate team is a family environment where when one of us wins, we all win. When one of us loses, we all lose. We take responsibility for each other's successes to help everyone learn and grow together." —Mike Bausch, Director of Speech and Debate

Our nationally-recognized Speech and Debate program allows students to explore their extracurricular interests while developing public speaking and active thinking skills.

Led by Mike Bausch, Director of Speech and Debate and holder of the Grier Family Distinguished Debate Chair, coaches strive to ensure that all students receive the best hands-on instruction in the state.

Speech and Debate is primarily a co-curricular signature program that takes place during club time after school. Additionally, there are opportunities for students to participate during the school day: including Middle School Electives, Upper School classes and summer camps for students of all ages.

Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to compete at local tournaments that include schools from around the state of all classifications, including 5A schools. They will also be able to travel to national tournaments and compete against the best teams from around the country and the world. Kent Denver is proud to offer a wide variety of travel and competitive experiences for students of all levels and abilities.

The wide range of events offered ensures that all students will find an area (or multiple areas!) they thoroughly enjoy and where they can develop their personal skillset. Regardless of whether students compete in Interpretation Events, Public Speaking Events, Debate Events or a combination of these activities, they are destined to become better presenters and performers, while enjoying a competitive atmosphere as well as a fun and energizing tournament environment.

Regardless of whatever time commitment students may choose to spend in Speech and Debate, they will find themselves in an active learning environment that makes them more confident both in the classroom and in all other areas of their life.
