Rock ClimbingOffered during the winter sports season, rock climbing helps students develop strength and movement through a variety of climbing exercises and cross-training programs.
No experience is necessary to join our rock climbing team. Students will learn indoor bouldering skills and techniques, as well as how to safely belay climbers, as the facility allows. Students who know how to safely belay, top rope climb or lead climb will be able to practice and hone in on these skills after getting tested in those skills.
During the season, athletes will focus on new techniques weekly, including smearing, foot swapping and traversing. Climbers are encouraged to participate in weekend competitions, both bouldering and roped climbs, hosted by the American Scholastic Climbing League (ASCL), which gives them an opportunity to compete with students from around the city.
Students who spend extensive time practicing—beyond what the program offers—may also be eligible to apply for additional credit through the Athletic Department.
