Sun Devils Roll Into Post-Season
Sun Devils Roll Into Post-Season

Although most of Kent Denver was on Fall Break last week, Sun Devil varsity athletic teams were in full swing! Here are just a few recent competition highlights.

Cross Country
Why did Coach Corky Dean chow down on his signature red hat last week? Going into regionals, Kent Denver's boys' cross country team was in a five-way tie for two remaining team qualification slots for the 3A state meet. Coach Dean jokingly told his runners that if they qualified, he would eat his hat. The team delivered, becoming the first KDS boys squad to qualify for state since 2009.

"Our boys' team was quietly getting stronger all season," Dean explains. "On a very slow course at regionals, our three back runners set personal records and the entire team had its best race of the year!" The seven-man team will now compete at state the weekend of October 26. The girls' team also had a strong run at regionals but fell short of a state berth.

Field Hockey
Field Hockey kicked off the playoffs this week with a 3-0 home win on Wednesday over Mountain Vista. The Sun Devils currently have a 11-3-2 record and are the tournament's #4 seed. They play again in the semifinals on October 29 at All City Stadium (Time TBD).

Football
On Saturday, the Sun Devils battled to a gritty 21-14 win over Riverdale Ridge. This improves their league record to 2-1 as they enter the final two weeks of the regular season with games against Alameda at home on Oct. 26 and at Bishop Machebuef on Nov. 1.

Boys' Soccer
The Sun Devils' wrapped up their undefeated regular season with big wins against 3A powerhouses Colorado Academy, Jefferson Academy and Lutheran High School. Playoff brackets will be released soon as the team looks to repeat as state champions!

Boys' Tennis
The 4A state tennis tournament was held in Pueblo last week, and the Sun Devils took the top spot at #4 Doubles while finishing fourth overall. The team also finished first at regionals.

Volleyball
With two games remaining in their season, volleyball has a 8-7 record. You can catch their final home matches against Jefferson Academy on Oct. 24 and Lutheran on Oct. 29.
