College Counselors Network with National & Global Higher Ed

Kent Denver's college counselors—Director Katie Thomas; Associate Director, Jessica Raab; and Assistant Director Matt Doyle—are working hard on behalf of our students!

In early October, Ms. Thomas and Ms. Raab attended the National Association for College Admission Counseling conference in Salt Lake City. In addition to meeting numerous deans and directors of admission from colleges and universities around the world, they attended an array of sessions ranging from trends in college admission to international recruitment, and from understanding committee-based evaluation to changing perceptions about large public universities. This professional development opportunity is one of the most productive conferences of the year for college counselors. Staying current on trends in the profession is important for our students and families.

As well, Ms. Thomas was asked by University of Pennsylvania's Dean of Admission, Eric Furda, to be a guest expert on his radio program, The Process, hosted with the Director of College Counseling from the Dwight-Englewood School in New Jersey. In addition to fielding live college counseling questions from phone-in guests, Ms. Thomas was asked to report on the NACAC conference as a "boots on the ground" counselor and conference attendee.

The college counselors have also attended events hosted locally by college admission officers from a range of schools. For example, The Sister Colleges (Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mt. Holyoke, Smith and Wellesley Colleges) co-hosted an event, as did the Arizona schools (University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University). In addition, five universities in the UK (University of Bristol, Durham University, Newcastle University, University of Southampton and University of York) hosted a luncheon, and Tufts University hosted an interesting spin on the admission information presentation called "Who Gets In and Why." These events allow the counselors to connect with admission officers and learn more about the opportunities at universities for Kent Denver students.

Back at Kent Denver, the college counselors have been busy hosting colleges and universities from around the world. More schools will be coming to KDS throughout October and November. Additionally, the Kent Denver college counselors hosted a reception the first week of October, in conjunction with counselors from Colorado Academy and St. Mary's Academy, for college and university representatives. While the counselors are working diligently with seniors, they will begin college workshops with juniors October 11-12.
