On March 5, classes began in Kent Denver's much-anticipated new Middle School building. Sixth-graders are the first to move into the facility, and students in the seventh and eighth-grades will join them next week. The entire Kent Denver community is welcome to explore the new Middle School at the Grand Opening Celebration on Mon., April 9 at 4 p.m.
In size, scope and design, the new Middle School represents a significant leap forward for Kent Denver. The 35,000 square foot facility nearly doubles the previously-available instructional and community spaces for our 220 students grades 6-8. The building also has improved security features, new access to outdoor learning spaces and state-of-the-art technology throughout.
Thanks to a design process that relied heavily on input from faculty, students, alumni and staff, middle-schoolers now have a space uniquely suited to Kent Denver's outstanding academic programs and understanding of how today's students learn. Classrooms feature high ceilings and expansive windows to allow ample natural light and a sense of limitless possibility. Furnishings—selected after faculty and students tested numerous options—maximize flexibility and can be quickly configured for large group discussions, small group collaboration or individual activities. Cutting-edge learning technology—including touch-screen projection whiteboards—and thoughtful design elements allow teachers to encourage creativity, collaboration and wide-ranging intellectual exploration.
Fostering community is a key element of the Kent Denver Middle School experience, and this new facility encourages community with spaces large and small. At the heart of the building, the soaring John Kuntz Commons enables the entire Middle School gather for assemblies, performances and community-wide events, while dedicated grade-level common rooms in the building's three wings allow students and teachers to come together in smaller groups. The Centennial Center, named for the centennial Class of 2022, serves as an innovative learning hub with multiple collaboration studios, an outdoor classroom and more than 1,000 books specially selected for Middle School readers.
In keeping with the school's dedication to sustainability, the new Middle School was built to the highest standards of energy efficiency using environmentally-friendly materials and construction methods. Kent Denver will apply for LEED Platinum certification, making this the third facility on campus to meet this milestone for sustainable design.
We welcome the entire Kent Denver community to join us in celebrating this amazing new facility at the Middle School Grand Opening celebration at 4 p.m. on Mon., April 9!
