Girls Build Community Through empowHERment and GAINS

The Kent Denver women’s empowHERment initiative provides girls with avenues to pursue passions, explore opportunities and create connections with other women who empower them. Student members recently gathered in the Horn Board Room over lunch to watch The Women’s Foundation of Colorado’s annual luncheon event. The theme was the Superpower of Community, focusing on the “collective power we have as a community to create change.” Peloton’s Robin Arzón—who transitioned her career from law to health and wellness—was the guest speaker.

“Robin's advice of advocating for what you need was particularly impactful for me,” says Cate C. ’23. “She inspires me to create a better environment for the people around me and younger students.”

Under the umbrella of empowHERment, the student-run Upper School GAINS Club welcomes and encourages girls who are interested in exploring the many rich and fulfilling careers in STEM fields. The GAINS club held a medical careers panel last week on campus to learn from and network with women in medicine.

“I cannot thank these amazing volunteer speakers enough,” says KDS GAINS Sponsor and empowHERment Director Mary Fran Park. “GAINS members were able to hear from and ask questions of a behavioral geneticist, a chief neonatologist and an orthotist/prosthetist specialist. What an amazing experience! The experience these women have given to our club members is immeasurable—I am grateful for this opportunity for our STEM students!”
